Through the good work of a group of educators and active citizens of Shelby County, an application was submitted to the Lilly Endowment, INC.  for a CAPE Grant (Community Alliance to Promote Education). In 2005, Shelby County was awarded the grant . The purpose of the program supported by this grant is to provide early literacy, school readiness, and parent education experiences to those children and families with the greatest need.  

CAPE Club will focus on social skills, literacy skills, and school readiness in seven Shelby County schools. 

Children enrolled in kindergarten will be assessed on their academic need for entrance into the program.  

Parents or guardians of children who qualify for the program must attend an orientation session and three parenting

work shops during the school year.
